Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did
“ Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did…..” John 4: 29.
There is something amazingly captivating about the testimony of a satisfied and enthusiastic customer. Your attention is captured not necessarily by the natural endowment of the person but rather by the radiating glow, joy and animated persona exhibited by this person as he or she shares some new discovery. Humans by nature find fulfillment in sharing with others what they personally discovered, probably to boost our ego or better still because sharing is beautiful.
Communication as we now enjoy it has been a major stride in technological advancement. It has revolutionized business and brought people at the opposite end of the globe closer. We love to talk and many people spend most part of their days on the phone reaching out to their loved ones. We cannot even wait to be off the road while driving to connect to someone. Speaking on the phone or texting while driving has become an irresistible temptation many of us have been ensnared by.The funny thing is that if we analyze the content of the discussions or the emergent basis for such attitude we realize the world has simply gone crazy.
However, in the case study of this faceless and unidentified Samaritan woman the sense of urgency to share her unexpected and life changing experience at her encounter with Jesus Christ is highly appreciated. This was a woman at the low end of the socio-economic and political class at the time. Women were despised and regarded as second- class citizens. They are to be seen but not to be heard in many cultures. In some religion, their faces are even hidden in a veil. This lady was from a mixed race to make matters worse and her reputation even among her kind was reprehensible. Yet, God used her to teach us some deep and profound truths about His Holiness and Righteousness in contrast to human depravity and misery without His divine intervention.
What a choice of candidate for this revelation! Jesus with all His glory even as an esteemed Rabbi and Prophet in Israel dared to cross boundary lines to reach out to this outcast of a woman. This act was very offensive to His disciples who seemed rather confounded by this unprecedented gesture of their Master. But the God of heaven and earth cannot be restricted or confined by the judgment of mankind. The scriptures reveal to us this transcendent nature of God. He chooses the weak things, the base things, the foolish things to put to shame the strong, esteemed and wise things of our human judgments. 1 Corinthians 1: 26-29.
His Ways confound the wise
The Almighty God never ceases to wow the human wisdom with His pre-eminent nature. His ways are past finding out for many of us who strive to figure Him out. Hear Him, “ My thoughts,” says the Lord, “are not like yours, and my ways are different from yours.” Isaiah 55:8. What continues to puzzle our mind is how could God in all His glory stoop down to be close to people even commoners of this world would shrink to have around them. The nobles of this world have created a Caste system wherein some of God’s creations are relegated as second -class citizens. Many of these unfortunate persons have nothing to do with circumstances that led to that status in the first place. To be born a female is a blessing of God for mankind and not a curse. In some societies, their tradition and belief create the impression that the female gender is unwanted and thus a taboo. To be in the lower status of the society is deemed as sub-human and thus the Scums of the world. This mentality is almost akin to how we view the aged in American society: confine them in a nursing facility and visit them once a year while we lust after the inheritance to be bequeathed by them.
He is a great God and an intimate Father
The glory of God has always been to dwell among His people. From the beginning of times, our heavenly Father delights to walk in the cool of the garden, in fellowship with those He fashioned in His image and likeness. God cannot break His laws but despite the rebellion of man, our Lord has shown transcendent wisdom in searching out a way to meet the righteous requirement of His laws that we broke in order to re-establish a growing intimacy with His children. Jesus Christ is the Wisdom of God and the Power of God in fulfillment of this awesome purpose and plan of the Almighty.
Democracy has been defined as the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. However, a close look at even the best democratic government of our times leaves much doubt on the truth of this definition. Most of our leaders are so estranged with the reality of the struggles of those they lead. Our God is more than a leader. He cares deeply for His people and delights to be close to us in ways many of us may not fully understand. Not only is He transcendent in majesty and glory but He could also be just a whisper away. “ Am I a God near at hand,” says the Lord, “ And not a God afar off? Can anyone hide himself in secret places so I shall not see him? Do I not fill heaven and earth?” says the Lord. Jeremiah 23: 23-24.
In our darkest hours of loneliness, isolation, rejection, dejection, our heavenly Father longs to fill our hearts with His awesome presence and usher in peace and comfort, if we humble ourselves and invite Christ into our lives. Hallelujah!!!
