Evangelism: Part 2
The Lord is a personal God
In the Book of Exodus we read a most profound account of Moses interaction with the God of all creation. Prior to this encounter Moses was hopelessly living a faceless existence cut off from his people and probably downcast with the fear that all was lost for the rest of his days in exile. If only he had played it soft, minded his business and turned his face away from the deplorable injustice against his people, life would not have turned sour for him. What a demotion from living in a king’s palace to a mere existence as a shepherd tending the flocks of Jethro. This was a moment of darkness and depression for this young man. But the Scriptures remind us that Moses deliberately chose to seek after the good news in a God more real and permanent than the fleeting pleasures of Egypt.
“ Moreover He said, ‘ I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Exodus 3:6.
It was in a moment of soul searching and deepest reflections over his life condition that the living God showed up. Moses was probably thinking about the stories that had been passed onto him by his mother about this great God and His dealings with his people. He was reasoning why things were the way with his people in Egypt. Has this God forgotten His covenant promises to His people? Then this unforgettable event happened that must have jolted him from despondency to terrible fear. The reality of God and His personable nature was more than this man could handle. It was unbelievable! The Bible says that God does not change. He remains the great ‘ I am.’
“Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel out of Egypt.” Exodus 3:9-10.
In His surpassing wisdom, the Lord showed up just at the right time in the life of Moses. He had been humbled from depending on his intelligence and ability to seeking the God of his fathers who alone can transform their hopeless predicament. God now recruited Moses for this divine assignment of communicating the reality of His awesome nature to the rest of the people. This good news must not be kept hidden from others. The rest of the people had been so terrorized by their captors that they had lost all hope of freedom from that land of horror. When you share your story it is personal and powerfully impactful. It communicates a reality to someone who may desperately be in need of such realization. Who wouldn’t love to be given a free and sure way to be freed from the hopelessness and emptiness of this life!
